چکیده

Abstract In this brief introduction, we present and contextualise ‘theoretical pathways’ elaborated in special issue, terms of understanding humanity from a deep-time perspective. The participating authors discuss wide range approaches related to thinking about human endeavour during the Middle Stone Age Palaeolithic ranging constraints technological niches Material Engagement Theory aspects palaeo-neurology, agent-based models self-domestication co-evolutionary model building. Together, contributions demonstrate that current theoretical aim explain require multi-disciplinary approaches, for some researchers, trend is move away symbolic standard or sudden mutation. By doing so, each contribution, its own way, enhances our ‘being’ ‘becoming’ time slice between 300,000 30,000 years ago. work represented here makes it increasingly clear singular particular aspect did not ‘give birth’ Homo sapiens Africa and/or Eurasia Palaeolithic. Instead, all complexity was probably shaped by broad factors processes took place over an extended period.

Mozambican grass seed consumption during the Middle Stone Age.

The role of starchy plants in early hominin diets and when the culinary processing of starches began have been difficult to track archaeologically. Seed collecting is conventionally perceived to have been an irrelevant activity among the Pleistocene foragers of southern Africa, on the grounds of both technological difficulty in the processing of grains and the belief that roots, fruits, and nut...

Evolution and Stability in the Middle Paleolithic and Middle Stone Age

The Acheulean to Middle Stone Age (MSA) transition is examined from an evolutionary perspective. The replacement of Acheulean handaxes by MSA points represents a shift from hand-held to hafted technology, but the timing and nature of this process are poorly understood due to the rarity of sites from the early MSA (EMSA), here defined as the portion of the MSA predating 130,000 years ago. The we...

Sibudu Cave, KwaZulu-Natal: Background to the excavations of Middle Stone Age and Iron Age occupations

Introduction Sibudu Cave, approximately 40 km north of Durban and about 15 km inland of the ocean (Fig. 1), is perched on a forested cliff overlooking the Tongati River, northern KwaZulu-Natal. The site is significant because it has a deep, well-dated Middle Stone Age (MSA) sequence and good organic preservation. It is particularly suitable for optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating bec...

Ages for the Middle Stone Age of southern Africa: implications for human behavior and dispersal.

The expansion of modern human populations in Africa 80,000 to 60,000 years ago and their initial exodus out of Africa have been tentatively linked to two phases of technological and behavioral innovation within the Middle Stone Age of southern Africa-the Still Bay and Howieson's Poort industries-that are associated with early evidence for symbols and personal ornaments. Establishing the correct...
